Bowie fans petition to stop Kanye West from ruining Bowie’s legacy

When news broke that rapper Kanye West might be working on a Bowie tribute album, Bowie fans rallied. They even started a petition to stop him. “David Bowie was one of the single most important musicians of the 20th and 21st century, it would be a sacrilege to let it be ruined by Kanye West,” the petition reads. As of right now, more than 11,000 people have signed the petition.

Bowie no doubt would have found the petition humorous. His career spawned dozens of celebrity imitators from Mick Jagger to Scott Weiland. Vulture.com even keeps a “taxonomy” of Bowie imitators.

West has denied rumors that he’s working on a Bowie tribute album, but he’s unabashedly a fan. He’s “one of my most important inspirations,” West said recently.

Via NME, a source told The Daily Star about the album:

“Some are straightforward cover versions with Kanye actually singing. On others he is rapping with his own lyrics over Bowie’s music.” Adding: “He is determined to carry on David’s work as a musical innovator. He says that the torch has been passed to him.”

Somehow, I suspect Bowie would have picked a different successor – maybe even the ukes!

  1. Kanye can do what the hell he wants. It’s a free world, isn’t it? It won’t do anything as a tribute to Bowie though…it’s just another opportunistic moneymaker…Bowie was genuinely weird, and Kanye is genuinely boring….

  2. I love it when Kanye feels that he’s doing the artist a honor by paying tribute to them. At least that what it looks like from my perspective.
