journeyfaithfullyWe’ve all done it — we pull out the iPod or the CDs or open up Spotify when we’re lonely and missing someone, searching for the perfect music to make us feel better and reminisce about that special someone missing from present life. Here’s a list of some of the rock songs you should turn up next time you’re sad she or he is gone.

1. Faithfully, Journey

It’s hard to top the dedication of Journey’s “Faithfully”: no matter how far you go, you’ve always got someone waiting for you back home, and that someone loves you very much. Even though “bein’ apart ain’t easy on this love affair,” onetime lead vocalist Steve Perry sings, “I’m forever yours, faithfully.”

2. From Where You Are, Lifehouse

This song from Lifehouse’s fifth album Smoke & Mirrors doesn’t mince words: “So far away from where you are, these miles have torn us worlds apart, yeah I miss you.” The melody is more wistful than angsty, a gentler song to fit the depressed mood.

3. Wake Me Up When September Ends, Green Day

In true Green Day fashion, this song is epic and angsty and gloriously sad. Summer is often associated with love, but summer is gone — frontman Billie Joe Armstrong wants nothing to sleep through the month that signals the end of summer. “Here comes the rain again,” he sings, “drenched in my pain again, wake me up when September ends.”

4. Without You Here, Goo Goo Dolls

While the Goo Goo Dolls have more than one song dedicated to the emotion of missing someone — whether because of physical separation or a breakup — this one stands out. You can really feel the emotion in the words “Now that you’re near, there’s nothing more without you, without you here.” This is for those really desperate days when you just can’t stand it.

5. With or Without You, U2

This U2 classic tells the tale of a relationship on the rocks, but the sentiment of the song is a desperate, unfulfilled desire to be with someone. Whether Bono is struggling to salvage, revive, or perpetuate a relationship, he’s definitely missing someone and wanting her back.
