Happy birthday to Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, who turns 51 today. Coincidentally, Pearl Jam’s third album Vitalogy reached No. 1 on the Billboard chart this week in 1994, but we just had “Better Man” off that album as our Song of the Day a few weeks back. So, to celebrate Eddie’s birthday, we’ll go with this cover of the song “Last Kiss,” originally released in 1961 by Wayne Cochran. Vedder convinced the rest of the band to cover the song after coming across a copy of it in a record store, and eventually it caught on among fans and was released as a single with proceeds going to benefit refugees of the Kosovo War. The song wound up going to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the highest position for a Pearl Jam song. Such a beautiful yet sad song, and what a bang-up cover by Pearl Jam.

  1. First song I learned on guitar. I was aware of the original, but Pearl Jam revitalized it.

G Em C D is the classic rock and roll chord progression.
