On this day in 2002, the world lost Clash singer/songwriter Joe Strummer way too early when he died at age 50 of an undiagnosed congenital heart defect. In remembering Strummer, I have to pick one of my favorite Clash moments, which comes during the song “The Right Profile” off the London Calling album. The moment comes during the verse that starts at around the 2:57 mark where things seem to be coming along fine, then Strummer suddenly belts out something like “ACKTHUPHTHPHTPUAAAAH!!!” I don’t know the story behind why this happened, but I like to pretend Joe just forgot the words, spat out some nonsense and they decided to keep it on the album. Whatever the reason may be, it’s hilarious.
