Don’t Miss The John Lennon 75th Birthday Concert This Saturday On AMC

johnlennonI know it will never happen, but I would like to see the world stop commemorating John Lennon’s death. Instead I think we should celebrate his life on the anniversary of his birth, October 9. Celebrating Lennon should be such a happy occasion, but December 8 has always been a bit of a downer, and right at the start of the festive season, too.

So this year marked the 75th year since Lennon’s birth, and Yoko put together a musical 75th birthday concert at the Theatre at Madison Square Garden. And when did she hold this concert? December 5th. I guess the end of the first week of December is just too entrenched as the time to remember Johnny by.

In any case, the concert was great by all accounts, and I’m really excited that it will be coming to my TV this Saturday. Imagine: John Lennon 75th Birthday Concert will air exclusively on AMC this Saturday, December 19 at 9:00pm ET/PT. Don’t forget to set the PVRs for this one.

It’s an interesting lineup of performers. The cynical might call them B-listers, but it’s a very diverse group, and in most cases the artists are well suited to cover Lennon material. They include John Fogerty, Peter Frampton, Brandon Flowers, The Roots, Willie Nelson, Spoon, Tom Morello, Aloe Blacc, Sheryl Crow, Steven Tyler and Kris Kristofferson.

There are some cellphone recordings floating around YouTube that give you a taste of the performances, and a couple of them look really amazing. The Roots do the most incredible version of “Mother”, I’m not sure who the vocalist was but it was absolutely off the charts and absolutely true to Lennon’s vision of the song.

Chris Stapleton from country music is a powerhouse singer and shares a beautiful rendition of “Don’t Let Me Down” with Brandon Flowers and Sheryl Crow. Tom Morello’s version of “Power To The People”, performed with a New York City street choir will blow your doors down. And Spoon absolutely kills “Hey Bulldog” and “Cold Turkey”. I can’t think of two more perfect songs for Spoon to cover.

I’m also looking forward to seeing Kristofferson and Morello doing “Working Class Hero”, Brandon Flowers taking on “Instant Karma”, and Frampton singing “Norwegian Wood”. Such brilliant songs. I will be raising a glass in celebration of my dear departed brother Johnny. Even if it is December.

    • Well it IS John Lennon we’re talking about. I don’t see any Dylans or Stones or Bowies on the list, but as I said, it’s a great, well-suited bunch and I can’t wait to see it.

  1. B-listers? What the hell do you mean by that? What is an “A-lister”? Justin Bieber, Taylor swift, One direction, Nicki minaj, Miley freakin’ Cyrus , all that riff raff? I can only Imagine those “A listers” doing Lennon’s songs! “Nobody told me there would days like this…….strange days indeed ” .
