Freddie Mercury movie set to start filming

A Freddie Mercury biopic has been under development for more than five years. Now, NME’s reporting that the script is getting reworked by screenwriter Anthony McCarten. That’s great news as McCarten’s the man who brought us Stephen Hawking’s recent biopic, The Theory Of Everything. That film has been racking up accolades: “To say the (debut) response here was rapturous would not be understating the enthusiasm I heard—not just from pundits but also Academy voters with whom I spoke,” wrote Deadline reporter Pete Hammond. “One told me he came in with high expectations for a quality movie and this one exceeded them.”

Shooting on the Mercury movie is due to start in June with Ben Whishaw the front-runner for the lead role. Sacha Baron Cohen was originally slated for the role, but he dropped out after “creative differences.”

“[I]n the end we felt that his presence in the movie would be very distracting,” Brian May said in 2013. “[W]e thought there has to be no distraction in the Freddie movie. You have to really suspend that disbelief – the man who plays Freddie, you have to really believe is Freddie. And we didn’t that could really happen with Sacha.”

Fans on IMDB have been having fun trying to come up with a name for the as-yet-unnamed movie.

“Anyway the Wind Blows – it’s a famous line from bohemian rhapsody and it sounds pretty good,” writes one. “I really think this corresponds to Freddie’s life and it really sounds like a great title.”

“i don’t like it!” another user responds. “it’s too long. if this movie is going to be about freddie it’s my suggestions:
The Great Pretender (P E R F E C T)
king of -the- queen
killer queen
the miracle
mercury rising (:D)
mr Fahrenheit (not cool)
legendary man (not cool either)”

Whatever the title, Queen fans can rest assured that the project is moving forward.
