Song of the Day: Lily Chou-Chou – “Glide”

Captain Quirk recalls: I watched a Japanese movie sometime last year called “All About Lily Chou-Chou” and the soundtrack has stuck with me ever since. It’s a unique, floaty movie about coming of age and comes tantalizingly close to being one of the best movies I’ve ever seen on that subject although it fell a little short for me in the end. I absolutely adore the musical choices the movie made though — a combination of classical music (Debussy) and original songs from Lily Chou-Chou, a fictional pop/rock star who plays a very central role in the film. In the real world, Lily Chou-Chou was a collaboration between singer Salyu and other musicians who put songs together under that name. The fictional star caught on in the real world though, and Lily Chou-Chou became a real act that wound up doing live shows. Quentin Tarantino even borrowed one of the more beautiful songs from the film to use in the movie Kill Bill Vol. 1.

After deciding I’d use something from Lily Chou-Chou as song of the day, I was very saddened to discover that the film’s soundtrack had been removed from YouTube. “Glide” is pretty much all that’s left, but fortunately it’s one of the top songs from the soundtrack.
