Song Of The Day: Wilco – One Wing (2009)

Rich Karfilis recalls: Jeff Tweedy has been criticized at times for the inscrutable, free-association nature of his lyrics, but this track is a lesson in songwriting. Take a simple metaphor as your theme, make the personal universal, come up with a memorable hook in your chorus, and take it all the way to the end of the song.

It can’t hurt to have a sweet little guitar lick open the song and give it a signature. Or to have a brilliant, syncopated drum pattern make the familiar unfamiliar when the drums kick in. Or to subtly switch to a major key in the build-up to the chorus. Wilco (The Album) is not one of the band’s better records, but “One Wing” is one great song.
