Keith Richards criticizes Led Zeppelin, Keith Moon, Roger Daltrey

keithrichardsRolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is running out of legendary rockers to criticize.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Richards gave his candid thoughts on Led Zeppelin as well as The Who frontman Roger Daltrey and drummer Keith Moon.

Richards called Zeppelin “manufactured.”

“I love Jimmy Page, but as a band, no, with John Bonham thundering down the highway in an uncontrolled 18-wheeler,” Richards said. “He had cornered the market there. Jimmy is a brilliant player. But I always felt there was something a little hollow about it, you know?”

Richards also said he’s a bigger fan of frontman Robert Plant’s recent album with bluegrass/country singer Alison Krauss than his work with Led Zeppelin.

“I think he’s doing better stuff now,” Richards said of Plant’s collaboration with Krauss. “I heard that and thought, ‘Finally, he’s getting his chops!'”

Richards went on to discuss Daltrey and saved his largest criticism for Moon, who is regarded by many as one of the all-time great rock drummers.

I always thought [Roger] Daltrey was all flash,” Richards said. “And I love Pete Townshend, but I always thought the Who were a crazy band, anyway. You would say to [Keith] Moon, if you were in a session with him, ‘Just give me a swing,’ and he [couldn’t] … He was an incredible drummer, but only with Pete Townshend.

“He could play to Pete like nobody else in the world. But if somebody threw him into a session with somebody else, it was a disaster. There’s nothing wrong with that; sometimes you’ve got that one paintbrush, and you rock it. I just was never really interested in that many English rock & roll bands actually, at all.”

Earlier in the year, Richards made criticisms of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper as well as Metallica and heavy metal music. Whether or not you agree with him, though, there’s something refreshing about Richards not being afraid to speak his mind about such things.

  1. He is an idiot. How can he criticize Sgt. Pepper when his band put out the ‘bad trip album of the year aka: “Their
Satanic Majesties Request”. Jimmy Page and Pete Townsend can out play him in their sleep. Keith Moon was great but I would put Ginger Baker ahead of him.

  2. These are mostly gentle criticisms and I pretty much agree with everything he says. I mean, he still says Page is “brilliant” and Moon is “incredible”.
