The winners will be announced in December and the induction ceremony will take place in New York City in April. Chicago, Cheap Trick, the Cars, Chaka Khan, The J.B.’s, Janet Jackson, Los Lobos and Steve Miller are this year’s first-time nominees.

Troy L. Smith of the Cleveland Plain Dealer believes that Janet Jackson and Nine Inch Nails are good bets to win induction.

“The clear standout on this year’s ballot is Janet Jackson, earning her first nomination since becoming eligible in 2007,” Smith wrote. “The massive pop star is coming off of a new album and a world tour this year. Jackson is, arguably, the best bet to earn induction, whether it pleases rock purists or not.

“Nine Inch Nails will probably be another big favorite to earn induction. But it better happen this year, as NIN will be up against contemporaries like Pearl Jam, Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine in the years to come.”

Fans can cast their choice for the top five artists at a ballot at (click here). The votes from that ballot will make up a “fans ballot” that will count along with the other voters towards induction.
