The best chill rock for chilling out

coldplaySometimes we don’t want fast-paced, adrenaline-charged rock. We can’t listen to Fall Out Boy and Bon Jovi and All Time Low and Joan Jett and the Black Jets all the time, because our ears need a break.

Sometimes, we just need chill rock that will relax our minds and won’t make us too angsty. A few bands that consistently write pretty chill rock include Lifehouse, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, and singer-songwriter John Mayer. Below is a sampling of some of the chillest, most emotionally satisfying rock songs out there. Use them on your next chill playlist, you won’t regret it.

1. You and Me, Lifehouse

This gentle love song isn’t too intense or overwhelmingly angsty, following a slow beat and a gentle rise and fall of emotion. One of Lifehouse’s finest.

2. Brothers on a Hotel Bed, Death Cab for Cutie

“Brothers on a Hotel Bed” is one of the most contemplative pieces out there, relying on a piano and a rock beat to try and discover how two people can be so different and still find a way to love each other in a world where no one knows what he wants.

3. Yellow, Coldplay

Coldplay’s classic is a must for any chill rock playlist, encouraging the listener to just let go a little, and enjoy a moment for its inherent beauty rather than overthink it to death.

4. Echo, The Hush Sound

The Hush Sound is one of those indie rock bands with incredible — but unrecognized — talent. Frontwoman Greta Morgan’s lilting voice questions how she is to stabilize herself in life and the grand scope of history when she thinks all she is, is an echo.

5. XO, John Mayer

Mayer clings to love in his cover of Beyonce’s “XO,” fearing it will soon be lost, but his fears never become fully realized. The key piece of Mayer’s cover is that he never becomes too angsty, and the song is tender and bittersweet without inciting too many nervous emotions.

Other prime chill rock songs include: “All That I’m Asking For” by Lifehouse, “Name” by the Goo Goo Dolls, “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol, “Peace on Earth” by U2, and “Your Body Is a Wonderland” by John Mayer.
