Song of the Day: Arctic Monkeys – “Mardy Bum”

“Mardy Bum” is British slang for a childish, grumpy woman (“Mardy Bugger’s” the male version of a “Mardy Bum”). As the title implies, this song’s about a girl who’s in a foul mood. It could be a one-sided lambasting, but the Monkeys’ Alex Turner turns it into something more thought provoking: a song about the ups and downs in a relationship — about how hard it is to love someone when they’re in a shitty mood.

Now then Mardy Bum
I see your frown
And it’s like looking down the barrel of a gun
And it goes off
And out come all these words
Oh there’s a very pleasant side to you
A side I much prefer
It’s one that laughs and jokes around
Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground
And it was up, up and away
Oh, but it’s right hard to remember
That on a day like today when you’re all argumentative
And you’ve got the face on

It’s an upbeat song that makes you want to move, but I find it bittersweet. That sort of negative energy in a relationship is enough to destroy it. It’s usually the sign that a break-up is imminent. But I guess some people really do have long-term relationships like this.

“I’m in an 8 year relationship with my now-fiancee and [more than often!] she has these moments where she’s in a right mood which really irks me off,” says a commentor on SongMeanings, “but I still remember I love her to bits and remember these laughs and jokes.”
