Song of the Day: Puddle of Mudd – “She Hates Me”

The ultimate break-up song. Puddle of Mudd’s 2002 hit was actually written long before the band got famous — way back in 1993. Jimmy Allen wrote the song as an homage to his brand new ex’s wrath.

“Give up on your music and get a fucking job,” she’d told him.

Allen didn’t take her advice, and eventually his ex apologized. The song itself is about as simple as it gets. Four chords and a scream-along chorus. Somehow, I imagine Allen dicking around with some friends while he was high in his mom’s basement when he wrote it.

I was living one big lie
She fucking hates me
Trust she fucking hates me
La la la love
I tried too hard and she tore my feelings like I had none
And ripped them away

The fact that’s it so simple and unpretentious is what makes it fun, and probably what made it brief hit back in 2002.
