What are your favorite Beatles tracks?

thebeatlesbannerIn a search the other day for rock news, I came across this really cool list of the 101 Greatest Beatles Songs over at Mojo Magazine. It’s a 101-slide slideshow, which is obnoxious by any measure, but it’s still fun to take a few minutes to browse through because the list was voted on by musicians and writers, so it’s interesting to see the comments associated with the songs.

Looking at the list brought two thoughts to mind. One, it just reinforced what a mighty catalog of songs The Beatles have. But it also made me wonder how my personal favorites compare.

If I had to rank my personal favorite Beatles songs, it would go probably like this.

15. Julia

A touching and understated beauty of a song written for John’s late mother.

14. Tomorrow Never Knows

What a terrifically trippy song. You can feel the mind-altering substances oozing out of this one.

13. For No One

John called this one his favorite songs that Paul wrote, and I feel the same.

12. Girl

A dreamy song about the type of girl John was searching for. As is the case with my other favorites, the melody really gets me.

11. Michelle

It’s so much fun to sing along to, even if I can’t ever properly pronounce the French lyrics.

10. Something

Of course this one will be near the top of any Beatles list. It’s such a strong, timeless song.

9. In My Life

It’s kind of hard to resist this song. Great melody, great harmony, great lyrics everyone can relate to.

8. Across the Universe

It’s such a beautiful, peaceful, chilled-out song.

7. Eleanor Rigby

This song really paints an effective picture of “all the lonely people.” It’s very powerful.

6. Abbey Road medley

I’m counting this as a song since it gets lumped together so much. I’m actually not really a huge fan of “You Never Give Me Your Money,” but the medley feels like such perfect closure to this band. “Sun King” and “Golden Slumbers” are my faves here for sure.

5. Dear Prudence

Love how this song just continues to build and get better as it grows. Every step of the way is great.

4. I Am the Walrus

It’s just so wonderfully bizarre lyrically and also so irresistibly catchy musically. That John wrote the first couple of lines of the song during acid trips is hardly surprising.

3. Happiness is a Warm Gun

It’s got that an edge to it that other Beatles songs don’t have. I kind of feel like it shouldn’t work as well as it does given that it’s three different songs mashed together, but it’s one of my favorites.

2. Because

The harmony here is so wonderful. I think it’s a stunningly beautiful piece of music.

1. A Day in the Life

I was happy to see my top pick was the top pick on the Mojo list as well. It’s a landmark composition that is still amazing all these years later. This was the song that when I heard it way back when I was younger, it made me want to dig deeper into The Beatles to find out what else was there outside of the normal radio favorites.

With that, let’s get the discussion going. What are your favorites? Weigh in on the comments or on the Rocknuts forum!

  1. Norwegian Wood, The Night Before, She’s a Woman, Yer Blues, Lady Madonna.

    Probably others.

Also fun is a list of horrible Beatles songs.

There obviously aren’t that many, All Together Now is pretty bad, but even that is kind of catchy.
