This Day in Rock History: George Harrison Divorces Pattie Boyd

laylaandotherassortedlovesongs It was one of the most famous (and strangest) love stories in rock history.

In the 1960s, as the story goes, Eric Clapton became friends with George Harrison, who at the time was married to model Pattie Boyd. Clapton fell in love with Boyd, and as a result, he wrote “Layla,” which is universally regarded as one of the greatest rock songs of all time off one of the greatest albums of all time, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek and the Dominos.

“(Clapton) said, ‘I’ve got something for you to hear,’ and he put it on in a cassette machine and played it,” Boyd said to ABC News in 2007. “And I said, ‘Oh, gosh, this is unbelievable!’ And he said, he was just looking at me and saying, ‘This is for you, I’ve written it for you.'”

Clapton wasn’t able to but she wasn’t into Clapton at the time, which caused him to fall into depression and drug addiction.

On this day in 1977, Boyd and Harrison got a divorce, three years after the two separated following Harrison’s affair with Ringo Starr’s wife Maureen. Two years later, she and Clapton got married. Their marriage didn’t work though as both battled substance abuse and Clapton had affairs during the marriage. Boyd, who would discover that another woman was pregnant with Clapton’s child, left Clapton in 1984 and got a divorce in 1989.

Boyd may have finally gotten her “happily ever after” earlier this year when at age 71, she married for the third time, this time to property developer Rod Weston.

It’s quite a tale, and it brought the world several great rock songs, including “Layla” and Clapton’s “Wonderful Tonight.”

  1. Let’s not forget George got remarried to Olivia Arias (who he met in late 1974) in September 1978 and they were together for the rest of George’s life. Much of the 1979 ‘George Harrison’ Album’ was inspired by George’s remarriage to Olivia and birth of their son Dhani
