Sam Smith starts working on arm sleeve

Ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration. The English singer of “Stay with Me” did however post a photo of his new tattoo on Instagram recently:

“For you, my little sailors,” the singer said when he posted the photo.

Here’s video of Smith wincing while he gets the tattoo:

A day later, Smith had to cancel his Australian tour due to a vocal chord hemorrhage.

“I am deeply, deeply saddened to tell my Australian fans, I have to cancel my Australian tour,” he wrote. “I have been vocally exhausted for a while now however last night in Sydney I had a small hemorrhage on my vocal chords. The doctors have told me I need to fully rest until my vocal chords have healed, otherwise this could become a huge long-term issue. I am so sorry to all who have bought tickets, I truly am. This kills me.”

Vocal chord hemorrhages are small collections of blood in the vocal chords, which can cause swelling.

“The surface of the vocal cord is rather like the fronds of a sea anemone,” British throat specialist Gerald Brookes, MD, told WebMD when Adele suffered similar problems in 2011. “It’s a very fragile membrane. It actually oscillates as we talk and sing. It’s that undulatory motion that gives the voice its musical quality. With vocal cord hemorrhages, if there’s excessive scarring it can interfere with the vibratory pattern of the vocal cord and give the patient a permanently husky voice.”

A big part of Smith’s appeal is his clean, pure voice. I’ll be sure to drink a beer to his speedy recovery!
